In the world of Education, we aren’t strangers to change.
Change and growth come hand-in-hand, and, in truth, it’s one of the wonderful things about working in Education: we are always striving to do the best possible job for children, which means being adaptable, flexible, creative.
At our core we maintain the same rigorous high-quality provision and curriculum offer, but we make subtle changes when we know they will help children most. The same is true for Literacy Tree; we make changes when we know they will help children most.
‘Writing Roots Reimagined’ offer the same rigorous, high-quality literacy planning that you know and love, with a few additions to support teachers in delivering the best, most up-to-date offer though our book-based approach.
What’s new in ‘Writing Roots Reimagined’?
Mixed-age Planning
With ‘Writing Roots Reimagined’ you will find it easier to access mixed-age planning, ensuring that adaptability and accessibility are smooth and stress-free. Mixed-age planning suggestions for adjacent year groups sit within the sequence, which means that if you’re teaching in a mixed-age setting you have instant access to each session as you need it. These can also be used to scaffold and stretch children in single-form entry classes or SEND provision, providing effective challenge at your fingertips.

Writing Framework Aligned
We have included a new ‘Glossary of Pedagogical Terms’ in each Writing Root, which defines terms from the DfE Writing Framework 2025 (e.g. editing, revising, sharing, publishing) for clarity, and to build teacher knowledge and confidence.

Within our ‘Writing Roots Reimagined’ you’ll find these key terms accompanied by new coral-coloured icons, so that you can see the links to the Writing Framework ‘at-a-glance’.

We have ensured that opportunities to teach the skills of revising and editing writing are explicit, with clear support for teachers on how to teach them.
By providing consistent models for revising writing, we reduce the cognitive load for teachers and children, as well as give progression in the skill of revising writing. For example, in Key Stage One we know that children need only make simple changes to their writing, whereas in Lower Key Stage 2 they may be revising language choices and syntax, and in Upper Key Stage 2 they may be making improvements to vocabulary, syntax, composition and more.
What about oracy & drama?
Our Writing Roots have always held drama and oracy at their heart and continue to do so. Opportunities to develop talk, with oracy skills in focus, are woven throughout our Writing Roots as well as fun, engaging, and effective drama opportunities. We know how important it is that children speak well and we offer ways to bridge the gap between spoken language and written language. In our Literacy Tree Glossary, we define specific conventions for drama in developing literacy skills.

Are there opportunities for dictation?
Our ‘Writing Roots Reimagined’ provide opportunities for dictation in Year One. These are intended to be taught in line with the phonics approach that your setting has chosen, and with your children’s known grapheme-phoneme-correspondences in mind. They are not a substitute for audience and purpose led writing, instead, we have created meaningful opportunities for dictation. These are indicated with a coral icon.

But is it still the same resource?
In essence, the Writing Roots include the same content and coverage as before, with additional opportunities that link to the Writing Framework, and with mixed-age planning suggestions on the same page.
