This is a Vocabulary Vine for Can We Save the Tiger by Martin Jenkins

A Vocabulary Vine is designed to be a sister resource to a Writing Root and Spelling Seed. It sits within our wider Teach Through a Text approach by explicitly identifying vocabulary from the book and providing additional opportunities for paired, small group and whole class experimentation with this vocabulary in context. Vocabulary Vines further complement spelling development too through exploration of the morphology (word structure) and etymology (origins) of words. They also provide oracy opportunities through a focus on talk tasks and on oral sentence construction. They are designed for short burst oral and vocabulary development.

A Writing Root is available for Can we Save The Tiger.

Writing Root Overview:

Outcomes:

Letter, explanation, persuasive poster, persuasive speech, simple poem

Main Outcome:

Discussion text

Length:

15 sessions, 3 weeks

Overview and Outcomes:

This is a three-week Writing Root based upon Can We Save the Tiger by Martin Jenkins and Vicky White, but also using the poem The Tyger by William Blake from Songs of Innocence and Experience.  Children begin by exploring an argument from another group’s perspective, before going on to read the text. During the sequence of learning, children create posters, persuasive speeches, poems (as well as having the opportunity to lean a poem by heart), explanation texts and discussion texts.  The final outcome gives children the opportunity to research an animal of their choice, before writing and publishing their discussion text.

Synopsis of Text:

Tigers are big, beautiful and fierce. But, like many other animals, they are in danger of becoming extinct. With breathtaking illustrations this large-format picture book tells us about the threats to the many endangered species on our planet and the need to prevent their extinction.

Text Rationale:

The plight of tigers and many other critically endangered animals are highlighted in this visually stunning picture book.  As a starting point for discussing conservation and protection, children will learn important environmental messages and understand the need to raise awareness of how to look after what we have left.  Compelling illustrations by Vicky White accompany powerful text by Martin Jenkins and the book may act as a springboard into other non-fiction texts on the same theme.
