At Literacy Tree, we believe every child deserves to see themselves reflected in the stories they read, while also having opportunities to explore lives, experiences and perspectives beyond their own.

Our LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Book List brings together a carefully curated collection of picture books, novels, poetry and non-fiction texts that celebrate identity, belonging, family, community and self-expression. Spanning Early Years to Upper Key Stage 2, the list includes both direct LGBTQIA+ representation and texts that explore adjacent themes such as difference, visibility, acceptance and finding where you belong.

Featuring titles including Grandad’s Camper, Julian is a Mermaid, Nen and the Lonely Fisherman, Me, My Dad and the End of the Rainbow and Nothing Ever Happens Here, the collection showcases authentic stories that centre joy, adventure, friendship, family and belonging. Alongside these are powerful texts such as The Lost Thing, Perfectly Norman and People Need People, which provide rich opportunities to explore themes of identity and community through high-quality literature.

The list also includes a selection of LGBTQIA+ history and biographical texts, introducing children to significant individuals, events and movements that have shaped LGBTQIA+ history and culture.

As with all Literacy Tree booklists, our aim is not simply to promote representation, but to champion exceptional children’s literature that inspires discussion, develops empathy and provides meaningful opportunities for reading and writing.

The list highlights where Literacy Tree resources are currently available, as well as identifying exciting new releases and recently published titles that schools may wish to explore.

Whether you are beginning to diversify your book stock, reviewing your reading spine or looking for texts that support conversations around identity, belonging and community, we hope this collection offers a valuable starting point for your journey.

Because the stories we choose don’t just teach literacy – they help children understand themselves, each other and the world around them.
