Every year group includes at least one Writing Root using a poetry text. These are usually narrative poems such as Night Mail in Y6, Jabberwocky in Y4, Jim, A Cautionary Tale in Y3, or The Owl and the Pussy-cat in Y2. Within these sequences children have opportunities to write poetry as well as other types of writing that stem from the poem such as letters and diaries, as well as specific work on comprehension or literary language. We have chosen these because their narrative form lends itself to engagement across an extended period in a similar way to narrative prose.
As well as this, many other Writing Roots include explicit opportunities for poetry reading and writing within the sequence of learning, such as within Can We Save the Tiger in Year 6, children study The Tyger by William Blake and within The Tempest children study and learn some of Shakespeare’s poetry. There are also other opportunities within specific sequences to write poems such as within Cinnamon, children write limericks to mirror the one within the book.
Alongside this, Literacy Tree includes works by poet laureates such Carol Ann Duffy and Ted Kooser. In terms of reading comprehension, Literary Leaves offer opportunities for the discrete study of poems and poetic form, from Year 2 onwards. There are poetry collections from significant poets as well as anthologies around a theme.

Our partner booksellers are Peters with whom you will receive up to a 26-30% discount if ordered via the link on our site.
We would recommend someone from the school attends training or that an INSET is booked if a school are adopting Literacy Tree's approach in full. Any CPD we run supports the Teach Through a Text pedagogy behind the approach and we always share outcomes and demonstrate many of the practical activities advocated in the planning. Please see our Training and Support page for details of courses and texts covered. A School Membership includes a wide range of free training that can be booked by the school admin.
Log in as the administrator. You will see a button on the left under 'Member Links' called ‘My Licensed Users’. Select this and then you will be prompted to add users using the ‘Add User Licence’ button. You can add emails and passwords for up to 5/10/20/30 people according to the size of your membership level and school.
If the user has an existing Individual or Free Membership, you will be prompted by the system to send them an email asking them to join your School Membership. They will have 30 days to respond, after which the invitation will disappear.

We will be in contact once we have reviewed your request.

Individual Memberships continue on a monthly basis until cancelled by the account holder.
Unfortunately we are only able to offer PDF versions of our resources.
Whilst we try very hard to ensure that the books we use are in print and readily available, from time to time books will finish print runs and bookshops may not stock them. Very occasionally books go out of print (OOP) altogether and cannot be supplied new. We would always recommend talking to your local independent bookshop owner to find out current availability. Sometimes third party-sellers through online bookshops may be able to get hold of new or second-hand copies of texts.
We also offer alternative text suggestions, on the specific Writing Root/Literary Leaf page, if books are OOP.
The plans are written for a class working towards the standards associated with their year group, and they sometimes offer personalisation ideas according to support and challenge but do not break these down into different activities. The plans should always be adapted to meet the needs of a particular class.
Log in to My Account and navigate to 'Member Links'. Then click through to View my Orders. After that, click on the orange tab on the right-hand-side that says 'View Order' for the purchase you want. These are organised by date and order number. At the top there will be an orange tab that says 'Print Order'. This is the VAT receipt and our VAT number is situated at the bottom.
Get in touch if you would like to update the admin for your School Membership. We recommend the admin email is a role-based one, such as admin@ or office@ rather than a personal email.
Across Literacy Tree there are specific Non-ficton texts including information books (The Great Fire of London), illustrated biographies (Pride, The Man who Walked between the Towers), fictional explanations (Until I Met Dudley) and narrative non-fiction (Can We Save the Tiger?). These lead to a variety of longer and shorter fiction, non-fiction and poetry outcomes depending on the context. Other non-fiction outcomes are covered as part of other (fiction and poetry) Writing Roots, including non-chronological reports, biographies, explanation texts, letters and newspaper reports (both using fictonal and non-fiction contexts).
In addition, Literary Leaves include a variety of non-fiction titles from Year 2 through to Year 6, where children have the opportunity to explore Reading Comprehension within non-fiction books.
If a user has an existing Individual or Free Membership, and you add them to a school membership account, you will be prompted to send them an email asking them to join your School Membership. They will have 30 days to respond to the invitation. Once they have accepted, any Individual Membership payments will be stopped and they will become part of your School Membership. If the School Membership expires, their account will be returned to a Free Membership, and they will be able to access any previously downloaded resources, but not resources added to their account within the School Membership.
The plans have been devised using the versions of texts shown (and these can be ordered directly through our site via our partner bookseller, Moon Lane Education and the ISBNs are shown on the list under the Subject Leader Toolkit, however it’s okay to use other versions and we usually try to refer to chapters or sections as opposed to specific page number where we can. Sometimes particular versions are chosen because of the collaboration with an illustrator, e.g. the Laura Carlin version of The Iron Man and do be aware that some versions might be slightly abridged, such as the version of The Selfish Giant that we use. With something like The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and The BFG there are so many versions that we’ve deliberately not used page numbers.
This varies, according to the text and the size of the class. In a ideal world it would be wonderful for every child to hold a copy each, but many schools purchase one between two (this is probably the minimum access level if it is a novel with small print) and if it is a picture book sometimes there is just one copy for the teacher and, if possible, a group set to use and refer to during shared or guided sessions.

Individual Memberships can be cancelled any time after the three month minimum term. To cancel your Individual Membership, log in and go to ‘My Billing Method’ under the ‘Member Links’ section and here you will see a ‘Cancel my Membership' button. Any resources purchased with a token will remain in your account and any unused tokens will continue to be available. Any subscription payments will be stopped but we suggest checking with your bank to confirm this. You can restart your individual membership at any point.
All our Roots have published outcomes. Some are ‘Instant published’ (like a post-card or letter) where children publish straight onto the special paper, but the extended outcomes have ‘planned published’ outcomes, where children plan, draft, edit and then publish their writing. This can take many forms and may be book-making, but could also be performance or creating a display of work.
We're always sorry to see you go, however if you do cancel your Individual Membership after the initial three-month term, you will retain any unused tokens (both those accrued monthly as well as any purchased additionally). You will also retain any resources purchased using a token. You can restart your Individual Membership at any point by selecting Upgrade Membership from the My Account page.
