Overview and Outcomes:

In this ten-session Writing Root, which we suggest will take 3 weeks to cover, the children think about thinking! Henry Finch has his first ever thought and he quite likes it. Children explore ideas around how to think but also about what makes them unique. Following a Mini Mindfulness session, the children help a Finch who is struggling to manage his own thoughts and write a guide on How to Think. Phonics teaching is embedded throughout and suggestions for Continuous Provision are also made.

Synopsis of Text:

From award-winning picture book makers Alexis Deacon and Viviane Schwarz comes an enlightening new story about courage and making a difference. For budding philosophers of all ages, this is the uplifting story of Henry Finch the loveable little bird who strives for greatness, gets it all a bit wrong, then makes it right again in a very surprising way - truly becoming great. This is an inspirational book. It is also very funny. It is for dreamers, philosophers, artists, the foolish and the enlightened. And anyone with a big bright idea. A profound picture book experience told with simplicity and style.

Text Rationale:

This text is an excellent story to encourage children to think about thinking, problem solving, identity and mindfulness. Henry Finch learns to quietly listen and become aware of his own thoughts. He learns to overcome feelings of self-doubt and awaken feelings of empathy and courage. Likewise, children can learn the importance of mindfully recognising their own thoughts and learn strategies of self-regulation and care.
