Overview and Outcomes:

This is a two-week Writing Root for Otto by Tomi Ungerer, in which children begin by making predictions about the story theme and events by exploring images and props from the story, such as a bear and a typewriter. Children eventually plan and write their own version of a historical story, using devices similar to those in the text. This works well as part of a curriculum topic about World War 2 (WW2) as children can use their knowledge about events to weave into setting descriptions.

Synopsis of Text:

A powerful and beautiful book told first-hand by Otto, a German-born teddy bear who is separated from his Jewish owner, lives through World War II, and is reunited with his original owner 50 years later.
