Overview and Outcomes:

In this one-week writing root for ‘Winter Sleep: A Hibernation story’ the children will begin by discovering a secret glade and all the wonders of nature that lie within it. Together they will explore the glade, identifying signs of nature. They will develop their understanding of animals’ homes, including mammals, amphibians and mini-beasts. Once their journey as nature experts has begun, they will create poetry using the rich and varied vocabulary based around the theme of nature. Finally, they will take their nature knowledge and create explanation texts for the subject of hibernation, using the text as a high quality modelled example. Through the text they will develop their knowledge as nature experts, as well as a sense of awe and wonder for the magic
of nature in winter.

Synopsis of Text:

A cosy winter story of a child and his grandma, who travel through a glade together exploring nature in winter and discovering the sleepy world of winter hibernation.
