""I enjoy watching Hannah model lessons and shared writes, as I could then see exactly how it's meant to be done.""

Emily, An Daras Trust, Autumn 2024

Half-day Online Course, 9 AM - 12 PM

A half-day year-specific course, led by Hannah, covering practical strategies for using high-quality children's literature as the primary approach to the teaching of English. This course is ideal for people who are new to Literacy Tree or changing to another year group.

This course will –

  • Identify how the Teach through a Text approach engages children as writers and immerses them in a literary world
  • Share examples of quality texts and well planned sequences used successfully in primary schools
  • Explore the progression of skills within the National Curriculum
  • Model how grammar, spelling and vocabulary contribute to a range of purposeful writing opportunities
  • Demonstrate how modelled writing is effective within a sequence of lessons

Exemplification Text

The course covers the pedagogy and the approach but one section of the day exemplifies this using a focus text and goes through each aspect. The book we will be exemplifying with is Dragon Post  by Emma Yarlett. We will be looking at this online but if you prefer to have a physical copy, please purchase in advance.

Content

  • We will identify the 'Teach through a Text' pedagogy and the rationale for this approach
  • There will be a familiarisation with end of year group objectives and key assessment foci
  • An in-depth look at one text, a Writing Root to exemplify, as well an exploration of other age-appropriate books as recommended by Literacy Tree
  • We will focus on personalisation and differentiation and show how to use modelled writing to support this
  • We will look at the importance of audience and purpose and explore the importance of publishing and book-making

Participants will receive –

  • A detailed planning sequence that supports the teaching of purposeful writing
  • A Zoom link to join on the day
  • All training resources electronically

""Seeing the journey of the book with examples, as well as a range of writing pieces (not just extended pieces) was really helpful. Also found the ideas of how to implement different hooks really useful.""

Gemma, Vaughan Primary School, Autumn 2024

""It was good to hear how the lessons can be adapted to suit the needs of the class. It was reassuring to know that the outcomes are for end of year and outcomes are repeated.""

Emily, Buxted Primary School, Autumn 2024

""I found every aspect useful and beneficial to me, especially as I am new to Literacy Tree.""

Francine, Waterhall Primary School, Autumn 2024
