We have a teacher panel for disabilities and SEND Representation to ensure we are choosing books for Literacy Tree that take this into account. While schools are used to making accommodations to physical environments, we need to also address the content of the actual curriculum and so we are trying to ensure we choose books that include positive representations of people living with disability and neurodiversity and acknowledge the contributions of individuals with these.
By adopting more inclusive and representative resources we will help children develop empathy, understanding, and respect for others who have different needs and also empower them to redress inequality.
Create Planning Sequences and Literary Leaves that represent and enable children to learn about disabilities and neurodiversity. We also want to ensure we give opportunities for narratives to focus on people living their lives, rather than the disability or neurodiverse condition.
Our list is a start and we are sure it will grow. Please let us know if you would be interested in joining our panel (we meet online twice a year) or if you have any further suggestions for books.
