As the country moves into its third lockdown, we have been again reading the beautiful, moving poem The Great Realisation by Tomos Roberts and beautifully illustrated by Nomoco. If you haven’t heard it already (or even if you have) and you’re in need of some bolstering, then we’d strongly urge you to have a listen – readings can be found online. Poems like this cut through the clutter and news-saturated noise of everyday life and whisper to us of courage, hope and strength.

Whether anthologies, narrative poems or stories with a strong sense of rhyme and rhythm, over the last few years, there have been many gorgeous poetry books published for children. Anthologies like Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright! and I am the Seed that Grew the Tree by Fiona Waters are beautiful reminders of the healing power of nature. Books like Dreams for Our Daughters by Ruth Doyle, My Hair by Hannah Lee and Eyes that Kiss in the Corner by Joanna Ho encourage children to feel comfortable and confident in their identity no matter their race or gender.

With all this in mind, we thought it was high time to update our list of poetry books for children to include some of our favourites published over the last few years. These books would be brilliant to support a day of home learning with children. They can listen to the poems, perform them, memorise them and will be sure to be energised by them. We hope you get as much pleasure out of them as we do!
