We love graphic novels here at the Literacy Tree. They are a superb way to encourage children to devour complex stories and to get children hooked on a series of books with exciting characters and expansive worlds. It is important – whether at home or at school – children get access to graphic novels as an alternative and equally valuable route into reading, particular for those reluctant readers. It is also great to see that most libraries now have substantial graphic novel/comic sections!
Whilst a huge and exciting part of the graphic novel catalogue is superhero fiction and anime, children need to see that graphic novels and comics can be much more than this. In this list, we have put together a collection of graphic novels which offer an alternative to the vast superhero back catalogue. We have included fantasy graphic novels such as the Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi; detective stories such as the Agatha Oddly series by Lena Jones; classic retellings such as Treasure Island reimagined by Wim Coleman and stories which explore the struggles of everyday heroes such as Frankie’s World by Aoife Dooley and Lockdown Looms by Banji Alexander (a great story to help children to reflect on their experiences during the pandemic).
We hope that there is something here for everyone and that graphic novels can – if not already – be part of every home and classroom story collection.
