A Literary Leaf for Rabbit and Bear

KS: R & KS1

Year Group: Year 2

Literary Theme: Bravery vs. Fear

Author(s): Julian Gough and Jim Field

Overview and Outcomes:

This is a 15-session Literary Leaf for the illustrated early novel, Rabbit and Bear. We start by encouraging the children to make predictions and then model how to look for evidence within the text by examining and exploring the actions of the characters. The leaf has key questions and encourages the children to pick out vocabulary and ask questions themselves.

Synopsis of Text:

We chose this book for a Literary Leaf as it is gorgeously illustrated with a classic feel. This is a brilliantly funny story of a rabbit and a bear who discover that things are always better when shared with a friend. This is an ideal story for readers moving on from picture books. Bear wakes up early from hibernation. If she can't sleep, then at least she can make a snowman. Rabbit has never made a snowman, but he definitely wants to make one that's better than Bear's. But with an avalanche and a hungry wolf heading his way, Rabbit soon realises that it might be nice to have a friend on his side.  From novelist and playwright Julian Gough, and the winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, Jim Field, this is a tale of friendship, gravity, and just a little bit of poo.
