Literary Theme: Power vs. Principles
Author(s): Maz Evans
This is a 17-session Literary Leaf for Who Let the Gods Out by Maz Evans which covers all aspects of the Key Stage 2 content domains. Children will begin by making predictions using the front cover, then move on to retrieving information to infer characters' actions and motivations. There will be opportunities for children to explore vocabulary in context and compare characters by summarising. They will work through some specific question stems in detail before creating their own questions and exploring aspects of the author's style. The leaf finishes with children predicting what's next in Maz Evans's Who Let the Gods Out series.
We chose this book for a Literary Leaf as we love a novel where known plots and characters have other opportunities to be re-told in narrative form.
Elliot's mum is ill and his home is sadly under threat, but a shooting star crashes to earth and changes his life forever. The star is Virgo - a young Zodiac goddess on a mission. Disaster strikes when the pair accidentally release Thanatos, a wicked death daemon imprisoned beneath Stonehenge, and must then turn to the old Olympian gods for help. After centuries of cushy retirement on earth, are Zeus and his crew up to the task of saving the world - and solving Elliot's problems too?
