A Literary Leaf for The Ride-by-Nights

KS: R & KS1

Year Group: Year 1, Year 2

Literary Theme: Fictional Worlds & Fantasy

Author(s): Walter de la Mare

Overview and Outcomes:

This is a 10-session Literary Leaf for the poem, The Ride-by-Nights by Walter de la Mare. This sequence begins by introducing children to the various constellations referred to in the poem. Children will enjoy listening to this poem being read and, as they get to know it better, enjoy performing it in different ways themselves.  Children will complete a range of interactive activates that cover all aspects of the KS1 content domain.

Synopsis of Text:

Up on their brooms the Witches stream,
Crooked and black in the crescent's gleam

It's Halloween and a family is preparing to go trick-or-treating. Little do they know that up above them a coven of witches flies unseen through the starry sky...

Children will love Carolina Rabei's stunning illustrations as they beautifully illuminate Walter de la Mare's thrilling, magical poem.
