A Writing Root for Overheard in a Tower Block

Updated

KS: Upper KS2

Year Group: Year 5

Literary Theme: Mystery & Truth

Author(s): Joseph Coelho

Overview and Outcomes:

This is a 15-session Literary Leaf for Overheard in a Tower Block in which children begin by identifying some of the poetic and figurative language before picking apart themes and retrieving information.  Through studying a range of poems, children will be introduced to the skill of summarising and will look at words in context to identify meanings in detail.

Synopsis of Text:

We chose this book for a Literary Leaf as it is a powerful collection of poems threaded together through the environmental context presented. The themes presented within are subtle, powerful and moving and, as a collection, provide an astonishing yet very real narrative about life in the city.
