This is a Vocabulary Vine for Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
A Vocabulary Vine is designed to be a sister resource to a Writing Root and Spelling Seed. It sits within our wider Teach Through a Text approach by explicitly identifying vocabulary from the book and providing additional opportunities for paired, small group and whole class experimentation with this vocabulary in context. Vocabulary Vines further complement spelling development too through exploration of the morphology (word structure) and etymology (origins) of words. They also provide oracy opportunities through a focus on talk tasks and on oral sentence construction. They are designed for short burst oral and vocabulary development.
A Writing Root is available for Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief.
Poetry in the form of an ode, soliloquy, setting descriptions, diary entries, additional chapter, non-chronological reports
Own version mythical narrative
20 sessions, 4 weeks
This 4-week Writing Root takes children on an adventure through the discovery of a sword, tied to which is an ancient-looking scroll, to writing an ode,
exploring character and setting development, and then writing an own version narrative chapter. Following Reading for Research into Greek Gods, the children will complete the sequence by writing an extended narrative in role as an invented demi-god.
I was just a normal kid, going to school, playing basketball, skateboarding. The usual. Until I accidentally vaporized my maths teacher. Now I spend my time battling monsters and generally trying to stay alive.
This is the one where Zeus, God of the Sky, thinks I've stolen his lightning bolt - and making Zeus angry is a very bad idea.
This book provides an opportunity to teach classic Greek mythology through a modern story which will grip children with its sense of adventure, relatable characters and fast-paced plot. With obvious links to the history curriculum, children will learn about Greek gods, mythical creatures and myths as well as explore themes of identity, perseverance and bravery.
