"I loved this and found it so helpful I particularly enjoyed the exemplification of the text. I will definitely be adding this to our curriculum this year."

Ellie, St John’s and St Clement’s CE Primary School, Autumn 2023

One Day Online Course

A whole-day year-specific course covering practical strategies for using high-quality children's literature as the primary approach to the teaching of English. This course is ideal for people who are new to Literacy Tree or changing to another year group.

This course will –

  • Identify how the Teach through a Text approach engages children as writers and immerses them in a literary world
  • Share examples of quality texts and well planned sequences used successfully in primary schools
  • Explore the progression of skills within the National Curriculum
  • Model how grammar, spelling and vocabulary contribute to a range of purposeful writing opportunities
  • Demonstrate how modelled writing is effective within a sequence of lessons
  • Walk through the website and explore what a membership will look like

Exemplification Text

The course covers the pedagogy and the approach but one section of the day exemplifies this using a focus text and goes through each aspect. The book we will be exemplifying with is Lizzy and the Cloud by Eric Fan and Terry Fan. We will be looking at this online but if you prefer to have a physical copy, please purchase in advance.

  • We will identify the 'Teach through a Text' pedagogy and the rationale for this approach
  • There will be a familiarisation with end of year group objectives and key assessment foci
  • An in-depth look at one text, a Writing Root, and an exploration of other age-appropriate books as recommended by Literacy Tree
  • We will focus on personalisation and scaffolding and show how to use shared writing for challenge and support
  • We will look at the importance of audience and purpose and explore the importance of publishing and book-making

Participants will receive –

  • A detailed Writing Root for Y2
  • All training resources electronically
Existing school members will receive 20% off any training places booked

"I really enjoyed going through the Writing Root, which was really useful as a new teacher to Literacy Tree to help me understand the sequence of planning and how the skills and knowledge build. I especially like the 'drip feeding' of essential grammar rather than the traditional approach of being taught as a stand-alone lesson, I think children will be more likely to use these in their writing."

Louise, Damson Wood Nursery and Infant School, Autumn 2023

"As a teacher in a school with 100% EAL pupils, the SPAG and vocabulary focus/ideas and tools were particularly helpful. I also liked that many of the strategies could be used with other texts such as 'Lucky dip description' and 'On the dot or not’."

Natalie, Orchard Primary School, Autumn 2023

"I appreciated the practical examples, pedagogy behind the platform, sharing best practices in breakout rooms, and inspiration for quality books to explore."

Reeta, Symondsbury Church of England VA Primary, Autumn 2023

All our courses support the Reading for Pleasure agenda and strengthen teacher’s knowledge of how to use text in the classroom
