"I really enojoyed the practical demonstrations of how to use the planning, for example; sentence strips, grammar splats. There was clear advice and examples of how to use the planning in terms of adapting the teaching to your class."

Charlie, Buxted Primary School, Autumn 2024

Half-day Online Course

A half-day year-specific course, led by Donny, covering practical strategies for using high-quality children's literature as the primary approach to the teaching of English. This course is ideal for people who are new to Literacy Tree or changing to another year group.

This course will –

  • Identify how the Teach through a Text approach engages children as writers and immerses them in a literary world
  • Share examples of quality texts and well planned sequences used successfully in primary schools
  • Explore the progression of skills within the National Curriculum
  • Model how grammar, spelling and vocabulary contribute to a range of purposeful writing opportunities
  • Demonstrate how modelled writing is effective within a sequence of lessons

Exemplification Text

The course covers the pedagogy and the approach but one section of the day exemplifies this using a focus text and goes through each aspect. The book we will be exemplifying with is Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush by Patrice Lawrence. We will be looking at this online but if you prefer to have a physical copy, please purchase in advance.

Content

  • We will identify the 'Teach through a Text' pedagogy and the rationale for this approach
  • There will be a familiarisation with end of year group objectives and key assessment foci
  • An in-depth look at one text, a Writing Root, and an exploration of other age-appropriate books as recommended by Literacy Tree
  • We will look at the importance of audience and purpose and explore the importance of publishing

Participants will receive –

  • A detailed planning sequence that support the teaching of purposeful writing
  • All training resources electronically

"I really enjoyed being able to discuss how different schools have implemented this planning whilst also understanding the process from the start of of a topic to the extended write."

Thomas, Wellington Community Primary School, Autumn 2024

"I loved every bit - particularly the different clues and hints to teach speech, synonyms, modal verbs etc. Donny was lovely and vibrant and his enthusiasm was evident throughout the day."

Ashleigh, Poverest Primary School, Autumn 2024

"I really found the training beneficial. Going into breakout rooms to discuss different ideas such as sentence strips was particularly helpful and I enjoyed learning how these have been applied within the classroom in various ways to meet the specific needs of the children."

Eirinn, Waterhall Primary School, Autumn 2024
