"I am new to Literacy Tree so was really great to have someone talk over and verify how to use many of the things that appear in each Writing Root."
Rachael, Flamstead End School, Spring 2025
Half-day Online Course, 9 AM - 12 PM
A half-day year-specific course, led by Tash, covering practical strategies for using high-quality children's literature as the primary approach to the teaching of English. This course is ideal for people who are new to Literacy Tree or changing to another year group.
This course will –
- Identify how the Teach through a Text approach engages children as writers and immerses them in a literary world
- Share examples of quality texts and well planned sequences used successfully in primary schools
- Explore the progression of skills within the National Curriculum
- Model how grammar, spelling and vocabulary contribute to a range of purposeful writing opportunities
- Demonstrate how shared writing is effective within a sequence of lessons
Exemplification Text
The course covers the pedagogy and the approach but one section of the day exemplifies this using a focus text and goes through each aspect. The book we will be exemplifying with is The Barnabus Project by The Fan Brothers. We will be looking at this online but if you prefer to have a physical copy, please purchase in advance.
Content
- We will identify the 'Teach through a Text' pedagogy and the rationale for this approach
- There will be a familiarisation with end of year group objectives and key assessment foci
- An in-depth look at one text, a Writing Root, and an exploration of other age-appropriate books as recommended by Literacy Tree
- We will focus on personalisation and scaffolding and show how to use shared writing for challenge and support
- We will look at the importance of audience and purpose and explore the importance of publishing and book-making
Participants will receive –
- A detailed Writing Root for Y3
- All training resources electronically
"I found the working wall discussions very useful for managing workload. Equally the grammar splats and the zones of relevance were an interesting point."
