This is a 15-session Literary Leaf for the illustrated early novel, Hotel Flamingo which starts with children retrieving information so they can infer later. Further activities explore the characters presented within the text, the language choices made by the author and reasons for particular events taking place. There are also planned opportunities to summarise the story and to write in role.
Anna Dupont has inherited Hotel Flamingo from her great-aunt Mathilde but the hotel hasn’t had guests for three years and is in a bit of a mess. In fact, the only inhabitants are two members of staff who have stayed out of loyalty and because the hotel is their home: T Bear - unsurprisingly, a bear - and Lemmy, who is a ring-tailed lemur. Together, they work to restore the once-popular venue of parties and accomodation of tourists to its former glory but can they compete with The Glitz: a fancy establishment up on the hill and run by meanest of mean, Ronald Ruffian? And then there’s Mr Grayson, a slinky hotel-inspecting cat, feared in the industry. What will he make of Anna’s refurbishment and will he have something to say about her allowing a family of cockroaches to stay at the hotel along with all the other animals? Themes of friendship, determination, acceptance and predjudice are an integral part of this delightful and humorous book.
