Overview:

This is a three-session spelling seed for the book The Last Wild by Piers Torday.  Below is the coverage from Appendix 1 of the National Curriculum 2014.

Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning.

There is a Spelling Seed session for every week of the associated Writing Root.

Overview and Outcomes:

This Writing Root is slightly over three weeks and is based upon The Last Wild by Piers Torday, the first instalment of an exciting trilogy. Children will learn and revise many of the key grammar requirements of Y6 and have opportunity to apply them within short and longer written outcomes. 

Synopsis of Text:

This is a story about a boy named Kester. He is extraordinary, but he doesn't know that yet. All he knows, at this very moment, is this:

1. There is a flock of excited pigeons in his bedroom.

2. They are talking to him.

3. His life will never be quite the same again...

A captivating animal adventure destined to be loved by readers of all ages.

Text Rationale:

This text by Piers Torday is the first in a magnificent, science-fiction series. It tells the story of Kester, a boy living in a dystopian future. This text has strong links to science and acts as an engaging springboard to discuss environmental issues. It also gives children the opportunity to explore the science fiction genre and consider the importance of communication.
